Endometriosis is a condition where the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body, such as on the ovaries and in the fallopian tubes. This can cause pain and scarring.
Symptoms can include lower abdomen or back pain, severe pain during periods, pain during sex, bowel and bladder symptoms, and fertility problems. Symptoms van vary in severity, but are commonly severe.
Endometriosis is very common, affecting 1 in 10 women. Endometriosis can impact on work, with over half of women having to take time of work “often or very often”.
There are imaging scans that can help in the diagnosis of endometriosis. These are scans with no radiation, so they are safe.
MRI pelvis gynaecological is the best imaging scan for mapping endometriosis, both in terms of extent and severity.
Ultrasound pelvis transvaginal can show endometriosis, but can miss mild or moderate severity endometriosis.
These scans can be booked directly with Vitalscan, or you can discuss with your GP or specialist.
